Spirit Trail Taking Shape on the North Shore

I was walking an old favourite last weekend, Harbourside Waterfront, where the North Shore feels like Big Sky country, seeing views to the mountains and a peaceful lookout to downtown. As I turned the first corner I found myself on new ground, the North Shore Spirit Trail, and I realized it had been awhile since I’d last taken this walk. It was great to see the kids with training wheels, dog walkers, cyclists and teens scootering along. Stated to be a 15 year project, there has been great progress, and plans are being put into place to ensure that residents can take advantage of the beautiful landscapes which surround our community.

North Shore Spirit Trail is a collaboration between the City of North Vancouver, the Squamish Nation, North Shore municipalities, the provincial and federal governments and other organizations. Envisioned as a waterfront-oriented, multi-use and fully accessible greenway, the North Shore Spirit Trail will provide pedestrians, cyclists, inline skaters and people with wheeled mobility aids access across the North Shore, from Horseshoe Bay to Deep Cove.

The North Shore Spirit Trail began with extensive community consultation, and is underway with the City of North Vancouver expecting to complete in 2016.  However certain, more challenging sections are expected to take upwards of 15 years to finish. The whole project is budgeted at just under $47 million, but this number could change, with all plans having not been finalized.
